- Synopsis

A young man finally returns home only to find he has to murder his father's beloved dog and lead the family to victory in a high stakes game of donkey basketball.

At least there's the sexy checkout girl.

Familiar Strangers follows the long-awaited return of Brian Worthington to his family for an all-American Thanksgiving in rural Virginia. It should be great until his newly divorced sister trashes the turkey, and he is pressured into killing the one member of the family everyone loves unconditionally - their dog Argus.

That's kind of stressful, especially since Brian suspects his Dad loves the dog more than he loves him.

"A funny and heartfelt story of a family going through the natural process of negotiating the changing relationships between parents and children, especially as those children grow into adulthood. "

- Review

This is a lovely, thoroughly enjoyable, little movie. I'll say right off the bat, Nikki isn't in it much but that's fine, it's still a heartfelt film that you'll end up loving and every member of the cast is a joy to watch. Brian (Shawn Hatosy) is home for Thanksgiving and through his eyes we see his slightly dysfunctional family. Erin (Cameron Richardson) has issues over her ex; Kenny (DJ Qualls, who is wonderful here) seems a little lost in life and wants to go on what appears to be yet another school course. Mom, Dottie (Ann Dowd, again a wonderful performance), is over protective about telling family members about who died, and when. Frank (Tom Bower) is chagrined that Brian isn't taking over his hardware store and so it goes. Brian, meanwhile, crushes on the very cute check-out chick, Allison (Nikki), who also seems to like him back. All the while, Kenny and Erin expect poor Brian to off the family dog, Argus, who is very old and sick. Dad adores the dog though and you worry about how he'd take the death. Again, the movie is small and simple but it really is heartwarming and has genuinely funny moments. We highly recommend seeing it and buying the DVD, it's worth it. The cast won two ensemble awards (MethodFest & Delray Beach Film Festival) and you can really understand why. Everyone is perfect in their roles.

The movie premiered @ The Method Fest Film Festival, Thursday night, March 27, at 7 pm, at the Motion Picture and Television’s Fund Louis B. Mayer Theatre.
